Persecution
Since almost the beginning of time, in nations across the globe, people groups of divergent religions, ethnicities, gender, political groups, and even sexual preferences, have felt the sting of a practice known as persecution. The term itself conjures up mental images of events past. Many times these are described as horrific acts in history books. While those who choose to led the assault against people groups for whatever purpose are often vilified, many times it is justifiably so.
The word persecution can be applied in many different contexts and thus the term itself is quite flexible. According to the Oxford English Dictionary online the word “persecution” has been used to describe intolerant “injurious acts”, “systematic violent oppression,” “difficulty, affliction, tribulation…persistent annoyance…and harassment.” It can be meant to describe oppression of others for any number of reasons. Generally the act of persecution shows hostile intent towards others. There is even a reference to persecution within the field of psychology; however, this particular definition is tied to mental disorders where the patient is suffering from some sort of paranoid complex which revolves around the actions of others, and their perceived intent, rather than actual intent.
Often the lines between what is considered to be discrimination and what is considered persecution become blurred. Within environments of extreme persecution, the acts can quickly escalate into full blown genocide.  Discrimination, although oppressive at times, is generally not equated with violent acts. Persecution; in contrast, is much more likely to include violence. Genocide always finds it roots within discrimination, escalates into persecution and results in the violent aftermath that makes its way into history books.
Barnabus Fund is an international Christian charity that focuses on providing aid to the persecuted Christian church. Their document entitled “Types of Persecution” describes exactly what occur in nations across the globe today regarding persecution. Societal discrimination, institutional discrimination, legal discrimination, suppression of mission activity, suppression of conversion to Christianity, forced conversion from Christianity, suppression of corporate worship, violence against individuals and community oppression are all included on this list (barnabusfund.org).  Of all types that exist, religious persecution has resulted in the greatest volume of violent acts throughout history. Were these deeds not documented by historians, citizens, or those mindful enough to make a record, one would almost think it unbelievable that such atrocities have been committed by human beings. If one were to accuse a demon of having committed these heinous acts it would be easy to accept; yet, for them to originate from living, breathing, sentient, human beings seems unthinkable. Follow along on a stroll through just a few of these moments in history; just remember to leave the light on before heading off to bed.
When one is asked to name an example of severe persecution, one of the most commonly listed is the holocaust that occurred during WWII under the direction of Adolph Hitler. This event resulted in the annihilation of over 11 million souls, not including the military members of the Axis or Allied nations, nor civilian casualties lost in the carnage of war. Although official statistics vary, it is widely published that approximately (6) six million of the victims were specifically Jewish in either their ethnicity or their religious practices. The other five million killed were inclusive of Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christians, Poles, radicals, leftists, pacifists, liberals, homosexuals, the mentally ill, gypsies, resisters and anyone else who stood in the way of Hitler accomplishing his goal of creating a master race while exterminating the scapegoat of Germany’s problems. Husbands were separated from their wives, children from their mothers, and siblings from each other, as families were torn apart by the systematic, merciless, cold, bone crushing, machine that the Führer unleashed upon Europe beginning in his own nation and expanding outward (The Yellow Star).
Families that spanned generations were literally turned into ash and soot in the ovens of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmmo, Majdanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka. One can visit the website www.remember.org and take a 360 degree virtual tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau. There one may listen to audio and video of witnesses and survivors of the holocaust, and get a feel for the utter depravity that can exist within men whose souls are as black as a starless night. These death camps are what come to mind when one thinks of extreme religious persecution, or genocide; however, the first of them was not constructed until late 1941 (remember.org).
Early on, the killing was conducted with bullets and was more up close and personal. Later in the war it was done at a distance where the exterminator didn’t have to look his victim in the eyes as he killed them, he simply emptied a container of Zyklon B pellets into a pipe leading into the ground.  When the conscience of man is so seared that killing others whether in mass or one at a time becomes as simple as changing one’s shoes, one who witness these events must have asked themselves “Why did God himself not stop such an atrocity” to which he would most likely reply to them, “why didn’t you?” Even now facts and eye witness reports are still being churned up across Europe and in the old Soviet Republic of all places (Hidden Holocaust). Currently National Geographic is hosting a television series called “Hitler’s Hidden Holocaust.” Before Hitler perfected his streamlined version of an assembly line of death he employed the use of “killing fields” where his special soldiers called Einsatzgruppen, meaning “action-groups,” would literally line up the Jews and machine gun them to death. There were four such Einsatzgruppen units activated during the Holocaust that consisted of around 2,000 men total. According to this National Geographic series the violence of the Einsatzgruppen would reach its apex in September of 1941 at the Babi Yar Massacre (Hidden Holocaust). The National Geographic documentary notes that Nazi SS records indicated that 33,771 men, women and children were murdered in this particular event. Even though the more efficient death camps were the preferred method of extermination later in the war, these Einsatzgruppen executions would continue until the end of the war. Historian Peter Black of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum says in the documentary that “the real story is not in the numbers that were killed, but all the Jews of town after town, village after village, family by family, person by person, one, by one, by one, bullet, by bullet, by bullet” (Hidden Holocaust).
Initially, the persecution against the Jews was subtle and later became more and more pronounced as laws were changed to systematically take rights afforded to most citizens in Germany in the 1930’s away from those who were of Jewish descent. According to a timeline published by “The Teachers Guide to The Holocaust” From April through October of 1933 Hitler’s regime made sweeping changes with “civil laws that barred Jews from holding positions in areas of civil service, legal and medical professions, and teaching in universities” (Teachers Guide).  Following these changes in the civil laws the next step taken in was to boycott Jewish owned businesses. Shortly after, the Nazis began holding book burnings to eliminate reading materials not officially approved by the Third Reich. The writings most frequently destroyed were Hebraic writings or anything written by a Jew. In order for Hitler to further his plans he needed to remove opponents of his within the German government, specifically within the S.A. “Sturmabteilung” also known as brown shirts or storm troopers. In one night he swiftly eliminated those who would oppose him in what history calls “The Night of the Long Knives.” These were not Jews, whom he targeted during this carefully choreographed military operation but strong members of Germany’s regular army. By eliminating them swiftly he paved the road for dictatorship (Teachers Guide).
Hitler’s strategic assassinations allowed for passage of the Nuremburg Laws in 1935 which further stripped rights away from Jews. The focus of his hatred was race, not religion and thus one’s Jewish-ness was determined by their heritage rather than religious affiliation. In total 120 new laws were passed restricting Jews from every direction possible. One of these laws “The Law for the Protection of German Blood and Honor” criminalized marriage, and even sexual relations between Jews and Germans (Teachers Guide). This law literally segregated Jews as an entirely separate race of beings altogether. With these changes in place it would be just a few years before anti-Semitism was breeding open hostility towards Jews (Teachers Guide). On November 9th 1938 history records an event known as “Kristallnacht” or “Night of Broken Glass.” During this monumentous event over 1000 Jewish synagogues were set on fire and 76 were completely destroyed. Businesses that belonged to Jewish owners were looted as were their homes. Although only a small number of Jews were actually killed that evening (around 100), this marked the turning point when Germany began rounding up Jews for transfer to the death camps (Teachers Guide).
Persecution began as something quite benign, and within a few years had morphed into a terrible beast. One who has done only a cursory reading of biblical text regarding end times might have been tempted to finger point the Third Reich as the fourth beast empire described in  the Bible in Daniel 7 and the feared beast in Revelation 12 and 13 due to the terrible persecution suffered by the Jews. However, as terrible as this empire was, it was not the ravaging beast described in Revelation, but is a clear foreshadowing of what is to come. The Third Reich was nothing more than an empire with a wicked despot at its helm. An empire led by a bloodthirsty tyrant, hell-bent on the mass extermination of a class of citizens whom God himself made a covenant with in Genesis 17:21 of the Bible through their forefather Abraham. (KJV)
For the careful student of history there was a critical introduction made during this era of history that illuminates scripture, and gives one pause when they consider the disturbingly profound implications. On April 4th, 1920 a “ferocious opponent of Jewish immigration to Palestine,” along with his followers, went on a “murderous rampage, attacking Jews on the street and looting Jewish stores” (Dalin). This man’s name was Hajj Amin al-Husseini. David Dalin writes in his article “Hitler’s Mufti” that “In late March 1933, al-Husseini contacted the German consul general in Jerusalem and requested German help in eliminating Jewish settlements in Palestine—offering in exchange, a pan-Islamic jihad in alliance with Germany against the Jews around the world.” It was not until the following year that Hitler birthed the Nuremberg Laws. The article itself is shocking to one who has never heard of Hajj Amin al-Husseini and sheds further light describing a visit he made to Auschwitz where he is reported to have “admonished the guards running the gas chambers to work more diligently.” Although Husseini fled and escaped prosecution, during the Nuremburg Trials Adolf Eichmann’s deputy Dieter Wisliceny made a damming statement about him:

"The mufti (Husseini) was one of the initiators of the systemic extermination of European Jewry and had been a collaborator and advisor of Eichman and Himmler in the execution of this plan. He was one of Eichmann’s best friends and had constantly incited him to accelerate the extermination measures” (Dalin).
It is important to point out that Husseini was able to escape prison, or a hangman’s noose by fleeing to Egypt where he met a young man named Yasser Arafat whom he was distantly related to. It was under Husseini that Arafat learned to hate Jews and became his protégé. Dalin writes that when Husseini died in 1974 Arafat made an address in which he said he “took immense pride” in being a student of Hajj Amin al-Husseini. Furthermore, Arafat stated that “the PLO is continuing the path he set” (Dalin).
Today there is a growing trend of violence that is expanding like rings in a pond from a single stone that spread further and further into nations and kingdoms that once were free of such dilemma. Much of it is not covered by mainstream media, it is ignored, or facts are glossed over. It receives attention, but not the scrutiny it deserves to shed light upon it. For those who are seekers of the truth, it is within their grasp to obtain it. For those who choose to remain ignorant, it is just as easy to do so. This religious persecution is not politically correct to discuss, it is suppressed and often those who are adherents to its religion are just as ignorant to its core teachings as American’s are. However the most frightening aspect of studying this particular religious persecution is that it isn’t against any particular religion, but is committed by those of a specific religion who are persecuting those who are not adherents to it.  Islam, the religion that claims to be “peaceful” and “tolerant” has engaged in a 1400 year history of Jihad with many nations proving it is in-fact intolerant of other religions and political systems (www.historyofJihad.com).
One who is familiar with the Old Testament may recall this verse from Genesis when God is speaking to Abraham about the fate of his oldest and first born son Ishmael. Impatient to see God’s prophetic words to Sarah about their child who was to be born come to fruition, they try to help God along and Abraham lay with his wife Sarah’s handmaiden, an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

"And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (Gen 17:18-21).
Arabs are the descendents of Ishmael. Muslims claim their heritage from Abraham; however, they fail miserably so in that they do not recognize that the blessing was specifically to come through the line of Issaic, not Ishmael. This little discussed fact is the source of all tensions in the Middle-East over land, religion and politics. Arabs and Jews are genetically cousins according to the Bible. Muslims will emphatically deny the validity of this text claiming that the Bible is corrupted. However for the reader it is useful to acknowledge that the violence is at its core a blood feud between family members. Even more illuminating is the following verse from Genesis 16: 12 describing the character of their forefather Ishmael consider it in comparison to behavior exhibited by Jihadists- “He shall be a wild man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man’s hand against him…” (KJV).  Sounds like conflict, doesn’t it?
This religious persecution is allowed to advance because of ignorance. Ignorance can be confined to being unaware of the motives of those engaging in the persecution; being ill-informed about their ideology, or the very documents that comprise their religious writings. Ignorance about stated goals or intentions for not only the original groups being persecuted but for all peoples is dangerous. The Scottish novelist, poet and clergyman George MacDonald is credited with saying this about ignorance “The two pillars of political correctness are a [willful ignorance] and a [steadfast refusal to face the truth].” Although he died in 1905, long before America embraced “political correctness,” his words ring true even today (thinkexist.com)
Religious persecution is still very much alive and growing across the globe today, all one need to do is take time to remove the blinders of ignorance, think, read, and apply reasoning to the wars and military conflicts taking place. As a nation America needs to stop worrying about being politically correct. She needs to stop worrying about what others will think about her and embrace the truth about religious persecution taking place upon the earth. Listen to this startling quote used by Sergeant Sam Smith II in his article “The Tears of Jihad” published in November of 2007. Smith’s nine articles are posted at www.awcf.org and are quite illuminating.

"Of the major world conflicts of the last fifteen years or so it would be easier to list those that do not involve Islam. In contrast, the wars in the Sudan, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Chechnya, Algeria, Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, the Spice Islands, the Philippines, Somalia, Iraq, Israel, Afghanistan, Mauritania, Kashmir and Thailand all include a self-identified Muslim fighting force. And that list does not include the major acts of international terrorism, the overwhelming preponderance of which are committed by Muslims in the name of their religion. Of the forty foreign terrorist organizations named by the U.S. State Department, six are Communist, six nationalist, one Jewish, and fully twenty-seven of them are Islamic.” ~ Dr. Gregory M. Davis Religion of Peace? Islam’s War Against the World
In closing, it is the reader’s responsibility to educate him or her self about persecution and what it means, not just for them, but the global community as well. If America as a people remains ignorant either through stubborn denial or failure to abandon political correctness for truth one day persecution may touch the children of this generation. It may one day darken the hallways of a school in a close neighborhood. Or rear its ugly head in a shopping mall or stadium, or even worse personally confront the reader unprepared with how to respond to the violence. Edmund Burke, an 18th-century Scottish philosopher and a British parliamentarian, said this, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Dear reader, do something with the knowledge contained within these pages. Take this definition and commit to discovering truth, do not allow wickedness and evil to prosper by simply being indifferent to it nor ignorant of it for your very life, even your soul, may weigh in the balance someday and God willing this essay will have spurned you to prepare for such a time.
